Yesterday (26th October), Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham announced the designation of two new MPAs for Scotland; one of which being the wreck of the Iona I paddle steamer, located near Gourock.
The Iona I was a 19th century paddle steamer, which was sold to the Confederate States as a blockade runner during the American Civil war. The vessel sank en route to its new owners shortly after its launch following a collision with the SS Chanticleer. A blockade runner, was a fast lightweight vessel used to carry supplies and post while ports were blocked from access during times of war.
Currently, the wreck is thought to be in good condition but is deteriorating. The designation of the MPA will provide legal protection and help to acknowledge the wreck as an important part of Scotland’s maritime heritage.
